The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is known to play a very important role in our country's Constitutional system of government. The Supreme Court is a part of the Judicial Branch. The main purpose of this branch is to decide the meaning of any laws made and also deciding how they are able to be applied to real life situations. The Supreme Court also decides whether a law breaks any rule involving the Constitution.
In 1789, the Supreme Court was created. In Article Three of the Constitution it establishes the Judicial Branch of the government and empowers the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had its first ever meeting on February 2, 1790. But no cases were actually heard until August 3, 1791. The first year after the Court was created was used to work out any organizational problems.
The first Supreme Court was made up of one Chief Justice (John Jay) and five Associate Justices. The Chief Justice is appointed by the President of the United States and is either confirmed or denied by the Senate. The purpose of Chief Justice is to have control over the Court and setting up weekly agendas for the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice can also have control over the trials dealing with the impeachment of the President. Today there is one Chief Justice and nine Associate Justices.
The Supreme Court has dealt with many very important cases over the last two centuries. It is easy to say that the Supreme Court has made a big impact on our nation in a in both negative and positive ways.
